Well regarded and well respected in the Australian menswear scene, Steve Calder, the man behind ’Calder Sartoria’, has recently launched his new Ready to Wear collection: Informale, with his fiance and business partner, Jordana. We sat down with Steve in our studio to discuss, ponder and admire his new venture.

”We had started working on Informale for around a year before we launched, but really, the concept has been the culmination of 14 years working in the industry…”

Informale, as the Italian name suggests, is a casual take on menswear tailoring- relaxed and tasteful for the modern discerning gentleman.

All of the garments are made right here in Melbourne, Australia. Asked why he hasn’t opted for the Made in Italy badge? Put simply, he wants to maintain a high level of quality control, as well as supporting local artisans – a notion we can respect.

”It took us about 6 months just to find the right local workshop who can make what we want. It’s been a hard slog getting everything done; and done right… But we’re incredibly proud of how it’s all turned out.”

Steve Calder Informale 2Every decision down to the RiRi zippers and horn buttons have been made with serious deliberation, no compromises made. The garments are made to last and go against the notion of fast fashion, a component of the industry Steve truly dislikes.

‘’We want to create clothes that people can really take pride in owning, pieces that don’t date in just a few months, pieces that stand the test of time. ‘’

Steve’s style combines an interesting mix of classic Neapolitan tailoring, British workwear, and Scandinavian minimalism; and the design of these garments show an amalgamation of exactly that. He’s taken the best bits of each to create garments suitable for most, if not all occasions.

Informale Olive Pants

T005 MODEL TROUSERS

The pants feature a thick elastic waistband with drawstring; and deep double pleats. Don’t let this fool you though, while comfort and functionality are paramount, these still look the real deal. Pair them with a blazer for a more formal look, or tucked in with a t-shirt for more relaxed vibes. They’re the perfect summer pant, whether you’re sipping sangrias on the coast of Sardinia, or rolling down Collins street on casual Fridays, these pants are sure to turn heads for those with great taste.

Steve Calder Informale Grey

The range consists of 4 key colours; navy, olive, black and stone, with plans for more next season.

S011 Safari Shorts

The Informale shorts are a tad more flamboyant, with a super-sized waistband and safari style buckles, they’ll stand out from the crowd. The shorts also feature Steve’s signature deep double pleats, something we’re all about.

With many exciting designs in the pipeworks, Steve has confirmed a number of pieces for the milder climates ahead. We won’t say too much; but expect heavier fabrics like flannel and corduroy, as well as his first range of outerwear and tops.
